Well, Caroline passed another milestone today. We had our first "emergency." I didn't have school today (it was a wind day!), and I was changing Caroline's diaper after her morning nap. She was being quite squirmy, so I asked her to hold the powder for me. Bad move. Somehow, she got the entire cap off and ended up with a face full of Gold Bond.
She freaked out, of course, and I tried to remain calm. I tried to sweep her mouth out with my finger, but she was still gasping to breathe. I splashed some water on her mouth and eyes, but it didn't seem to be helping.
I called Poison Control. Apparently, Gold Bond is not toxic if ingested, and they were more worried about the powder that she could have breathed into her lungs. They advised me to try to get her to drink fluids and listen for the cough to taper off.
She wouldn't drink, she was still coughing, and her eyes were quite red.
So, I loaded her up to take her to the Children's Close to Home. Well, the Urgent Care portion doesn't open until 3:00 pm on weekdays. They sent me just across the street to another Urgent Care. I signed Caroline in, and I sat down to begin our 45 minute wait. Aaron met me there, and within a few minutes, a nurse called Caroline's name. She said that they didn't have respiratory equipment small enough for Caroline, and she recommended that we take her downtown to the Urgent Care at Children's Hospital.
We get down there, and they take us right back because they are concerned about her, but they also told me once we were back in the room that they didn't want a healthy baby sitting in the waiting room with a bunch of sick kids. I thought that was really nice.
The doctor followed up with Poison Control and the doctors in the ER. They were actually more concerned with her eyes than anything else because her oxygen levels were good and her lungs sounded clear.
The doctor stained Caroline's eyes and used a black light to check for scratches. None. But, the doctor decided Caroline should have her eyes flushed.
They had to restrain Caroline in a sheet, and since Caroline is Caroline, she managed to escape the nurses' first attempt! She screamed a lot, but overall, she did really well. Her eyes are fine!
And, all's well that ends well, right? Caroline walked out with a cherry popsicle! She fell asleep on the way home, and the patient is sleeping comfortably in her bed.
